Power Rankings, AEW Dynasty Edition

The dream matches delivered, there is a new world champion, and more.

AEW has not taken to calling certain of their additional pay-per-views by a different name. At least not yet. So, it can be hard to sense the scale of the new shows they are adding, such as Sunday night’s AEW Dynasty, and whether it’s going to be more of a true destination show or more of a premium live event, to borrow the WWE parlance.

Both versions can be entertaining, by the way. But as far as the significance of the show’s outcomes to major stories, major characters, or the direction of the company, the premium live event side of the scale is different from the model that AEW used for its quarterly PPV shows for their first few years of existence.

A premium live event will have great matches, but it might be serving more to set up the next big PPV than actually paying off big angles or delivering big moments. The destination PPVs make history. Turn over new chapters. And so on.

Let’s get to the Kanefabe Power Rankings, AEW Dynasty edition. We’ve got five entries in this week’s rankings.

In this week’s power rankings:

  • Sometimes predictable is good, Jack Perry edition

  • Incredible matches on AEW Dynasty

  • AEW has a new world champion

Even with a stacked card on paper, I wasn’t sure what to expect from AEW Dynasty as a new show on the PPV calendar. With its inaugural run now in the books, early returns indicate that this was a big one. A big show with big moments in the company’s history.
