Wrestling Quotables: AJ Styles keeps his house keys

AJ tricks Cody, all the ways to call the Bloodline scary, and both Lucha Bros in action.

I rarely wear dress clothes. We’re talking a handful of times per year. At one point in time, I wore a shirt and tie for work every day. Then it was a number of years of business casual attire, but I at least had occasion a coupe times a month to throw on a button down shirt.

As the frequency has done down, I notice more and more how aware I am of looking out of place when I do dress up. The clothes are little boxy. My neck and arms look shorter. At certain glances, it almost looks like the clothes themselves look as uncomfortable as I do.

That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw AJ Styles in his suit jacket on Friday night. My dress code is business casual, his dress code is a t-shirt and leather vest with wrestling pants. It’s a stretch for both of us to wear a suit. That attire is reserved for special occasions. Something like announcing your retirement, or pretending to announce your retirement and fooling nobody except for exactly one person.

At least that one person looks like dynamite in his suit.

In today’s quotables:

  • AJ tricks a gullible champion

  • Everyone wants you to be scared of the new members of the Bloodline

  • An event that definitely isn’t part of the decathlon

  • The excitement of a Rey Fenix main event

  • The battle for AEW continues apace

Let’s get to this week’s wrestling quotes. On we go.

This is the house that AJ Styles build. And I called you out here to hand you the keys.

AJ Styles, addressing Cody Rhodes

Maybe I’m looking at this wrong. Cody is the face of the company after all. He’s the one leading WWE into its new era. In his leadership position, maybe he’s inclined to give people the benefit of the doubt.

So maybe Cody isn’t an idiot. But he is most certainly a sucker.

I did appreciate the fake tears from AJ, and I suppose the real tears from Cody? Hey, he’s an emotional guy. Top guys in 2024 should be open about feeling big emotions.

It looks like we’ve potentially got the story that will build to the main event at Summerslam this August in Cleveland. AJ Styles will work his way up the rankings now that he’s at the proverbial back of the line. He’ll be mean to Cody in the process, and with their shared history and their outstanding first match at Backlash, there’s lot of potential for this to build to have a big fight feel.

This angle was a great place to start, complete with AJ’s one day a year in a suit and Cody’s misplaced trust.
