Wrestling Quotables: Fighting for Team AEW

Drew McIntyre the truth teller, reflections about YEETING, and more.

AEW is still searching. There are some components of the individual shows and the overall vibes that feel like they're back on track. Some things feel true to AEW's identity.

There are still some unsteady feelings, however. Former AEW wrestlers are front and center in WWE stories as that promotion continues to fly high. The departure of CM Punk in particular continues to linger and cloud AEW with some uncertainty. Even as they turn that dispute into an angle with an entertaining new version of the Elite, it leaves some clouds of uncertainty hanging over AEW.

In that context, there’s one man with the gravitas and respect to trump the opinions and pettiness of the other parties. And he’s officially part of Team AEW.

In today’s quotables:

  • Fighting for the heart and soul of AEW

  • Drew McIntyre and I are still confused

  • The King of the Ring continues

  • The Cope open

Thanks for being here. On we go.

You want to know why I’m willing to fight in a match that almost ended my career. It’s because of one reason. I love AEW. I love what AEW represents. I love what AEW gives to the fans. And I will do anything, and I mean anything, to protect it.

Bryan Danielson, on this week’s AEW Collision

As Matthew and Nicolas delivered a promo to set up the Anarchy in the Arena match that will take place later this month at Double or Nothing, a small cohort of fans fired the familiar "CM Punk" chants. It's funny to piece together where those loyalties lie. If they're against the Elite, they are for Team AEW. That means they're chanting Punk's name in support of the pro-AEW side of the feud.

That gets very confusing.

Bryan Danielson placed himself at the center of the feud with this post-match promo on Saturday night. He advocated for the importance of AEW and why he wants to fight for it. That helps simplify things in so many ways, and it makes it feel like a big deal when it comes from Danielson and is punctuated with the "yes!" chants.

As I noted in yesterday's power rankings, Danielson looks poised to do a lot of good for pro wrestling on his final run as an in-ring performer. One of his biggest contributions might be helping to restore AEW's identity and what made it feel special in the first place.

Each Tuesday, I round up these wrestling quotables. It’s a chance to look at the lines that were telling in terms of the current stories in WWE and AEW. It’s also a chance to laugh at some of the absurd things that come out of people’s mouths over the course of a week in pro wrestling.
