Wrestling Quotables: Is Paul Heyman OK?

The wise man dug himself a hole, CM Punk actually tells the truth, and an ode to singing wresting fans.

It is my distinct pleasure to proceed with this lede and mark a first for the Kanefabe Wrestling Newsletter: the first opportunity to draw a comparison between professional wrestling and the television show Superstore.

The second season of the show includes a storyline where Sandra carries out an elaborate lie for weeks and weeks about her boyfriend Jeff. He’s a pretend boyfriend to her, and an actual boyfriend to another character on the show named Mateo.

It starts as a cover story for Mateo. It evolves into Sandra telling stories of her trips and exploits with Jeff, sending herself gifts, and otherwise creating the relationship by herself.

This week, we learned that Paul Heyman has spun some fiction of his own when it comes to his interactions with Roman Reigns in the time since his loss at Wrestlemania. We only know of fake phone calls and text messages to hand down orders for the rest of the Bloodline. Here’s a look at the moment when Paul was busted:

I would like to think that the deception ran much deeper than that as Heyman maintained the facade of frequent communication with the Tribal Chief.

In this week’s Wrestling Quotables:

  • Paul Heyman playing pretend

  • CM Punk actually telling the truth about himself

  • Remembering a favorite instance of rowdy fans singing

That and more in today’s newsletter. On we go.

“I haven’t even spoken to Roman Reigns since Wrestlemania.”

Paul Heyman

The wise man finds himself in some deep water. He has argued with Solo Sikoa about the direction of the Bloodline, citing directions from Reigns himself. He withdrew Roman’s name from the WWE Draft, saying that he was instructed to do so.

Now there is anarchy in the bloodline, new members taking over, and it’s all falling apart for Paul Heyman. I like to imagine that, even with the cat out of the bag, he is still sending himself messages from Roman Reigns telling him that he’s a very wise man and doing a great job. Maybe even a handwritten note here and there to pick up his spirits.
